Kit Kat & Oreo Cake

There are few things I enjoy more in life than baking something new! I love following recipes and ending up with pretty and tasty treats to try out and share with others.

This particular cake was a surprise for my boyfriend who happens to love both Kit Kats and Oreos. Boy, was he surprised to walk into my apartment to find this beauty waiting for him after work today! He LOVED it, and I’m sure your loved ones will as well.

The recipe itself is pretty simple and for a “decorated” cake it didn’t take as long as I expected to make it. I have seen the same type of cake made with other toppings, such as M&Ms, nuts, etc. Customize to your personal taste! Oreo minis were perfect for me, but let me know what you decide to try on your’s! Enjoy everyone 🙂

Ingredients:

  • 1 15.25 oz Betty Crocker Super Moist Chocolate Fudge cake mix (or cake mix of your choice). If you want to go homemade, we LOVE this chocolate cake.
  • 3 eggs
  • ½ cup oil
  • 1 ¼ cup water
  • 2 16 oz containers of chocolate frosting
  • Approximately 42 regular size (not family or snack size) Kit Kat bars (single stick)
  • 1 or 2 8 oz bags of Oreo minis (image displays 1 8 oz bag, 2 bags would cover top completely)

Directions:

1-Preheat oven to instructed heat from back of box. You can choose to either use 8 inch round cake pans or 9 inch round cake pans, but either way you need to use two of the same size. Spray both pans with cooking spray and set aside.

2-Make cake batter according to the directions on the back of the box. Pour half of the batter into each of the round cake pans and insert both into the oven. Set timer according to size of pans and their cooking time on the back of the cake box.

3-When both cakes are finished cooking, turn them upside down and remove from the pans onto a cooling rack to cool off. Leave on cooling rack for about an hour or until completely cool to the touch.

4-Remove first cake and set it on serving tray or cake stand. Generously frost the top of the cake.

5-Take second cake round and place it on top of the first cake round. Generously frost the top of this cake and then frost along the sides of the now-layered cake.

6-Break the Kit Kats into sets of two sticks and place the pairs side-by-side along the edge of the cake. There should be little to no space between the pairs.

7-Once you have put a border on the whole cake with Kit Kats, you’ll see there is space between the top of the cake and the top of the Kit Kats. This the space you have available to fill with another tasty treat! I chose Oreo minis for my topping and went with a sparser spread. Feel free to try another topping or simply double the amount of Oreos I used and fill it to the top of the Kit Kat bars!

8-This is an optional step, but I chose a ribbon and tied it around the cake. This not only enhances the appearance of the cake, but also keeps the Kit Kats from falling over before you’re ready to cut into the cake the first time.
